Packing for Umrah is easier with a list. This one covers the clothing side: what to wear, how many pieces to take, and the small things that make long days in the heat more comfortable. For the rules of ihram and the rites themselves, follow your group leader or a scholar you trust.
Abayas
- Two or three abayas for a trip of a week or so. That gives you one to wear, one to rest, and one in reserve if something needs washing.
- Light, breathable fabric. Nida (also called nada or nidha) and crepe are the usual choices. They stay opaque, fall away from the body and don't hold heat. Read our guide to summer abaya fabrics.
- Pockets. You'll want your phone, hotel key and tasbeeh close at hand without carrying a bag everywhere.
- Sleeves that are easy to roll back for wudu, so you're not wrestling with fabric at the taps.
- The right length. You'll walk a lot, often on stairs and escalators. An abaya that just skims the top of your foot is safer than one that drags. See the size guide to choose by height.
- Muted colours hide dust and wear better over several days than very pale ones.
Scarves and hijabs
- Two or three scarves in light fabric, one per abaya plus a spare.
- An underscarf or cap, so your hijab stays put through long walks and crowds.
- A few pins and a small magnet or two.
Under your abaya
- Loose cotton or cotton-blend inners or co-ord sets that breathe. A light co-ord set works well under an abaya.
- Enough to change daily; laundry isn't always convenient.
- Socks, if you prefer your feet covered.
Footwear
- One pair of comfortable, broken-in walking sandals or shoes that slip on and off easily.
- A light pair of slippers for the hotel.
- A small drawstring bag for your shoes when you enter the masjid.
Small things that help
- A crossbody pouch for documents and money.
- Unscented toiletries, if your group advises them.
- A small travel steamer or wrinkle-release spray for crepe and nida.
- A refillable water bottle.
- A light shawl for air-conditioned spaces, which can be cold after the heat outside.
Before you fly
Try everything on at home, including walking up and down stairs in your abaya, and wash anything new once so you know how it behaves. If you're ordering an abaya for the trip, leave yourself time for an exchange in case the size isn't right.
